Family Therapy in Alexandria VA

Family in a counseling session in Alexandria VA

Most families do not arrive because of one argument. They arrive because the same argument keeps happening, in the same shape, and nobody can see where it starts any more.

Life Enrichment Counseling Center has offered family therapy in Alexandria, VA since 2005 — in person near Old Town and by secure video across Virginia.

What families come to us for

  • Communication that has broken down into the same loop every time
  • Conflict between a parent and a teenager that neither knows how to step out of
  • Parenting differences that have become an argument between the adults
  • Divorce, separation, and co-parenting after the household changes
  • Blended families working out roles, loyalties, and house rules
  • A child’s difficulty that has pulled the whole family into managing it
  • Grief, illness, deployment, or a move that has changed how the family works
  • Adult siblings or adult children and their parents renegotiating a relationship

How family therapy works here

Family therapy treats the relationships rather than any one person. In practice that means finding the pattern — who reacts to whom, what happens next, and where it could be interrupted — instead of deciding who is at fault.

  • Family systems work — understanding the household as a system where one person’s change shifts everyone else.
  • Communication skills — practical, practised in session rather than described. See enhanced communication.
  • Parenting support — structure and follow-through that survive a hard week, and agreement between the adults about what those are.
  • Divorce and blended family work — co-parenting, step-parent roles, and the loyalty binds children get caught in.
  • Individual sessions alongside family ones — where one person needs their own space to work something through.

Who attends is decided with you and often changes over time. Starting with the parents alone is a legitimate and common first step.

Insurance and fees

Life Enrichment Counseling Center is a participating provider with all Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO and HMO plans, including Federal Blue Cross Blue Shield, Anthem, and CareFirst. Cigna, Aetna, and Optum are accepted by select therapists, so coverage can depend on which clinician you see — tell us your plan when you reach out and we will match you with someone in network.

Verifying benefits is ultimately the client’s responsibility, but our office staff will check them for you as a courtesy. Sessions run 35 to 60 minutes. Full details are on our costs and payments page.

Frequently asked questions

Does the whole family have to come?

Not always. Some family work starts with one or two people and widens later; sometimes the most useful first session is with the parents alone. Your therapist will suggest who to include and when, and it can change as the work goes on.

Will the therapist take sides?

No. In family work the relationships are the client, not any one person in the room. A good family therapist will make sure everyone feels heard — including the person who was most reluctant to come.

Our teenager refuses to attend. Is it worth coming without them?

Yes, and it is more common than people expect. Parents changing how they respond often shifts the pattern on its own, and it is frequently what makes a teenager willing to attend later.

Can family sessions be held online?

Yes. Video sessions can make family work easier to schedule when members are in different households or have conflicting commitments.

Do you work with divorce and blended families?

Yes — see our page on divorce and blended family counseling. Co-parenting, step-parent roles, and loyalty conflicts between households are common reasons families come to us.
