Meghan Maddock, PsyD

(Gainesville #1, Online Therapy)

I was first drawn to psychology for two reasons: 1) I wanted to help people; 2) I find people interesting and appreciate hearing their stories, no matter how mundane or dark.

In my years of schooling and practice, my reasons haven’t changed; but the way I think about them has. I’ve come to realize that the best way to help people is by helping them help themselves. As a therapist, I may be the “expert” on certain skills or mental-health-related research, but my clients are the experts on themselves, their lives, and their needs. My task and my greatest joy as a therapist is helping my clients to better understand themselves and to move towards a life that is meaningful to them.

Over time I have also come to appreciate the complexity of individuals, as well as their relationships and circumstances. I truly believe that every person has a story and that their behaviors, struggles, and strengths will make sense if you understand their story well enough. In trauma work in particular, I find it vital to understand the ways a person’s patterns of thoughts and behaviors may have begun as a way to keep them safe in difficult situations.

I also believe that healing journeys are not linear. They occur at a client’s own pace, which can vary from session to session or even minute to minute. My hope is that, as we work together and build a therapeutic relationship of trust, you can take the next steps in your journey, whatever that may look like for you.
