February is Black History Month, a time to honor the resilience, brilliance, and contributions of Black Americans throughout history. It is also an opportunity to reflect on mental health within the Black community and recommit ourselves to compassion, awareness, and advocacy. At Life Enrichment Counseling Center (LECC), we believe that healing is for everyone. This month, we pause to highlight the importance of culturally responsive care, mental health equity, and the ongoing work of breaking stigma within communities of color.
Honoring a Pioneer in Black Mental Health
This month, we recognize Dr. Joy DeGruy, a renowned therapist, social worker, and author known for her groundbreaking work on racial trauma and healing.
Dr. DeGruy introduced the concept of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome (PTSS), a theory examining the multigenerational trauma experienced by descendants of enslaved Africans and its psychological and social impact today.
Her work reminds us that mental health does not exist in isolation. History, systemic experiences, community stressors, and cultural identity all shape emotional well-being. Healing requires understanding the full story.
Mental Health in the Black Community
For many years, mental health has carried stigma within parts of the Black community. Messages such as:
- “Pray about it.”
- “Be strong.”
- “Don’t talk about family business.”
- “Therapy is not for us.”
have sometimes prevented individuals from seeking support.
While faith, strength, and resilience are powerful, they are not replacements for professional care when it is needed.
Research shows that Black Americans often:
- Experience higher rates of stress related to discrimination and systemic inequities
- Are less likely to receive mental health treatment
- Are more likely to receive misdiagnoses or inadequate care
Acknowledging these realities is not about division, it is about awareness. When we understand the barriers, we can work toward removing them.
At LECC, we are committed to providing a safe, culturally sensitive, and compassionate environment where every client feels seen, heard, and respected.
For Our Non-Black Clients & Community Members
Black History Month is not only for Black Americans. It is for all of us.
It is a time to:
- Learn about Black leaders, innovators, and mental health pioneers
- Listen to lived experiences without defensiveness
- Recognize how systemic stress impacts mental health
- Advocate for equitable access to care
- Support Black friends, colleagues, and family members with empathy
Advocacy can be simple yet powerful:
- Educate yourself
- Speak up when you witness bias
- Validate the experiences of others
- Support mental health access in underserved communities
Being an ally means creating space, not taking space.
Healing is Collective
Mental health awareness in the Black community is growing. More individuals are seeking therapy. More conversations are happening. More stigma is being dismantled.
That progress matters. But there is still work to do.
At Life Enrichment Counseling Center, our vision is to inspire people to live more fulfilling lives and step into their wholeness. We stand beside individuals, couples, adolescents, children, and families, during difficult seasons and beyond.
Whether you are navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, life transitions, or simply seeking personal growth, you do not have to do it alone.
